Dr. Bernie Siegel in Fight For Your Life

Hospitals, hospices, and terminally ill patients from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School, and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale have added a new weapon in the fight against cancer - this home video program called Fight for Your Life. This multi-part program will help you or someone you love become a survivor. It is hosted by Dr. Bernie Siegel, author of the bestseller Love, Medicine & Miracles. It provides information, inspiration, motivation and education through the review of 4 cancer survivors' stories. The four patients, all of whom were told that they had weeks or months to live, tell how they used the positive attitudes and other Bernie Siegel techniques to survive. And in fact, each of them did survive. Dr. Bernie Siegel, America's most popular alternative medicine doctor provides continuity throughout these testimonials by relating his own experiences with cancer patients. For the newly diagnosed cancer patient, this tape provides useful survival techniques and helps alleviate feelings of powerlessness and despair.

Nova - Cancer Warrior

Curing cancer is medicine's holy grail, and its Sir Galahad might be a quiet Boston researcher. Judah Folkman has spent 40 years studying tumors as a surgeon, and Nova: Cancer Warrior examines his career and exciting breakthroughs. Focusing on the blood vessels that feed tumors rather than the cancer itself, he and his colleagues have made giant steps toward starving the bad cells while keeping the rest of the body healthy. Clinical trials at the University of Wisconsin should offer crucial evidence in living patients; at the same time, lab research is quickly finding newer and better candidates for treatment. Including lab footage, interviews with researchers and patients, and careful explanations of the scientific concepts involved, the program goes far to convince the viewer that safe and effective treatments for cancer may soon be available.

Focus on Healing through Movement & Dance for the Breast Cancer Survivor

Focus on Healing is a therapeutic exercise program for women who have had any kind of breast surgery, node dissection, chemotherapy or radiation. It was developed by two physicians and a dance movement specialist (Sherry Lebed Davis) to help women regain and maintain range of motion, help reduce the risk of Lymphedema, help prevent frozen shoulder, help decrease depression and add to increased sexuality. As a result of the exercises in this program there was a 98% success rate in reducing the complications listed above. Today, more women are surviving breast cancer and statistics of developing Lymphedema range from 6% to 61%. It can occur 2 days after surgery to 30 years after surgery. Exercises such as the ones on this video can help prevent future problems for survivors, and therefore help to improve their quality of life after breast surgery.

The video is 49 minutes long and shows 5 women ranging in age from 35 to 72, all of whom have survived breast cancer from 6 months to over 20 years. They are NOT professional models and go through the exercises in an unintimidating manner. The movements can be done seated and the narrator/exercise leader constantly reminds the viewers to only do as much as they feel up to at the time. The pace never gets fast enough to become aerobic; to keep the heartbeat down, especially right after surgery. (Always check with your doctor before beginning this program.) The music is classical for the slower sections, more upbeat for the alternating faster sections, and is fun to move to. You might even find yourself smiling!

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately one out of every two American men and one out of every three American women will have some type of cancer during their lifetime. Incredibly, though we're spending billions on cancer research every year, for the first time in history, cancer has surpassed heart disease as the number one killer in people 45 and older. The statistics for the African American community are far worse.

So what's the answer? Is there a miracle solution that will prevent us from having to fight this war? It appears there is. In the program, prominent Washington DC area clinician, Dr. Norton Fishman, presents us with the latest scientific findings from a conference held at National Institute of Health. Fountain of Youth

ABC News travels to the Japanese fountain of youth -- a place that some medical researchers believe may hold the key to anti-aging remedies. In the Japanese town of Yuzuri Hara, many residents live well into their nineties. Diseases such as cancer, diabetes or Alzheimer's are uncommon. Dr. Toyosuke Komori, the town doctor who has studied and written books on longevity in Yuzuri Hara, believes locally grown starches help stimulate the body's natural creation of a substance called hyaluronic acid, or HA, which aging bodies typically lose. This may ward off the aging process by helping the cells of the body thrive and retain moisture, keeping joints lubricated, protecting the retina in eyes and keeping skin smooth and elastic.

Cancer, Nutrition & Healing

More than six years ago, eco-consultant Jerry Brunetti received word that without chemotherapy treatment he would be dead in as little as six months from an aggressive form of lymphoma. He opted not to travel that route, and instead embarked on his own journey seeking advice, treatments, alternative protocols and hands-on care from a wide variety of sources. The result has been depth of understanding that is almost beyond compare, steady improvement in his own overall health, and a marked reduction in the size of the affected lymph nodes.

In this remarkable video presentation, Jerry shares the priceless lessons and wisdom gained through his successful struggle with this devastating disease. You'll never look at cancer -- or cancer treatments -- in quite the same way after viewing Jerry Brunetti's step-by-step plan for restoring health using fresh foods and natural, holistic, herbal treatments. You will learn about: strengthening immunity; holistic treatment protocols; health-boosting recipes; supplements and detoxification; supplemental conventional therapies; foods to eat; foods to avoid; and much more!

Understanding Melanoma

Part of the award winning public television series Healthy Body/Healthy Mind. Melanoma is one of the most common forms of cancer, affecting more than 53,600 Americans each year. No one knows the exact causes of melanoma and doctors can rarely explain why one person gets melanoma and another does not. However, research has shown that people with certain risk factors are more likely to develop melanoma than others. People who are concerned about developing melanoma should talk with their doctor about the disease and the symptoms to watch for.

Targeted Cancer Therapy

For dozens of years, the most common forms of cancer treatments included traditional chemotherapy, radiation and possibly surgery. Now newer medications are emerging, thanks to advances in science. Research has brought about a better understanding of cancer on a molecular level. This understanding is resulting in medicines that zero in on properties unique to cancer cells, allowing those medicines to selectively affect cancer with the potential of less collateral damage to healthy cells in the body. This program, "Targeted Cancer Therapy," describes how targeted therapies work, and introduces patients and families who are finding hope and healing where there once was none.

Colon Cancer: Prevention & Treatment

"The hardest battle to fight is the one that should be the easiest but isn't." - Priscilla Savary, colon cancer patient educator. It begins as a polyp, a tiny ball of tissue that forms in your intestinal lining. Polyps are not cancer, but a certain percentage can become cancerous if left in place. That equation means if you do not already have colon cancer, the odds are in your favor of successfully avoiding it. Screening and removal of polyps can stop the cancer before it begins. And yet colon cancer is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in America, claiming some 56,000 victims each year. This show looks at the arc of colon cancer -- from screening options and education, to the stages of cancer, to treatment options, to a new horizon of treatment and prevention - through the eyes of three patient/interview subjects and the health and medical experts that are our guides through each story. In some cases those medical experts are the actual physicians treating our patients. In other cases they are experts who can offer a look at the bigger picture of this disease.
