BC Wheelchair Sports

BC Wheelchair Sports is a not-for-profit organization devoted to providing opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities. Since being founded in 1971, we have worked to provide access to quality programs for athletes with disabilities. This has always been our focus and continues to be what drives us.

In partnership with other Provincial Wheelchair Sports Societies across Canada, BCWSA is dedicated to promoting Wheelchair Sport and community awareness.

Canadian Amputee Sports Association

The Canadian Amputee Hockey Committee was established on February 25th, 2001 by Canadian Amputee Sports Association. Our goal is to develop amputee hockey for both recreation and competitive play

We help amputees to get over their impairments, and participate in sports. Sports can significantly increase self-esteem levels of athletes with a disability.

Canadian Cerebral Palsy Sports Association (CCPSA)

The Canadian Cerebral Palsy Sports Association (CCPSA) is an athlete focused national organization administering and governing sport opportunities targeted to athletes with CP and related disabilities. CCPSA and its provincial partners cooperate as a proactive force to facilitate the development of equitable and fair sporting opportunities for our athletes.

Vision

  • Athlete members of CCPSA will have access to and be encouraged to participate in quality sporting activities for the development of athletic potential;

  • CCPSA will operate in harmony with our provincial associations and other partners, advocating sport development, athlete recruitment and talent identification;

  • CCPSA will be a volunteer driven organization capable of fully funding CCPSA programs with dependable and noble sources of revenue.

Canadian Deaf Sports Association (CDSA)

CDSA promotes and facilitates fitness, amateur sports and recreation among Deaf Canadians of all ages from the local recreational to Olympic level.

With the assistance of Provincial and National Deaf Sports Organizations, CDSA supports Deaf athletes who have the talent for participating in National and International competitions such as the Deaflympics, and at all levels of ability. CDSA encourages development and affiliation of Deaf sports organizations across Canada that offers training programs and competitions of all kinds.

Brought together in sport by their culture and means of communication (sign language), Deaf people personify the highest Olympic goals in the celebration of world community and sportsmanship.

CDSA is currently and actively affiliated with the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD).

The International Olympic Committee officially recognizes ICSD as the only Federation responsible for administrating all sporting events involving the Deaf.

International Paralympic Committee (IPC)

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement. The IPC organizes the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, and serves as the International Federation for 12 sports, for which it supervises and co-ordinates the World Championships and other competitions. The IPC is committed to enabling Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and to developing sport opportunities for all persons with a disability from the beginner to elite level. In addition, the IPC aims to promote the Paralympic values, which include courage, determination, inspiration and equality.

Quebec Wheelchair Association

The Quebec Wheelchair Association, a non-profit organisation officially recognised as the organisation to govern the wheelchair sports by the Direction des sports du gouvernement du Québec since 1990, regroups more than 300 athletes across the province. Under its wing are five major sports such as athletics, basketball, rugby, tennis and handcycling. Other sports like fencing, powerlifting, archery, sledge hockey, sailing, and alpine skiing are on the rise.

To co-ordinate and facilitate the access to wheelchair sports at every level of performance for disabled people is its mission. The association's partners are: The Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association (CWSA), the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball Association (CWBA) and the Canadian Basketball Association (CBA), the Fédération de basket-ball du Québec (QBA), Athletics Canada and the Fédération québécoise d’athlétisme, Tennis Canada and the Fédération québécoise de tennis and finally the Féderation québécoise des sports cyclistes.

Wheelchair Rugby Australia

Wheelchair Rugby is a team sport for male and female athletes with a disability. The aim is to score goals by crossing the opposing team's goal line while in possession of the ball. The ball may be passed, thrown, batted, rolled, dribbled, or carried in any direction subject to the restrictions laid down in the rules. The team scoring the most goals by the end of the game is declared the winner.
