American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry
The Geriatric Mental Health Foundation was established by the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry to raise awareness of psychiatric and mental health disorders affecting the elderly, eliminate the stigma of mental illness and treatment, promote healthy aging strategies, and increase access to quality mental health care for the elderly.

The Foundation's Vision for America's aging population includes:

  • Increased public awareness of the importance of mental health in the aging population;
  • Removal of stigmas for those seeking mental health services;
  • Increased access to quality mental health care for the elderly; and
  • Promotion of healthy aging strategies for all seniors, family caregivers, and others devoted to the overall health of our communities.

To achieve this vision, the Foundation's Mission is to raise awareness of psychiatric and mental health disorders affecting the elderly. The Foundation focuses on public education targeted to the health care consumer and family caregiver about mental health promotion, prevention, and treatment. The Foundation develops programs to enhance communication and foster broad collaboration between the geriatric mental health research community, mental health care providers, and the general public.

Nurse Competence in Aging is a 5-year initiative funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) Inc., awarded to the American Nurses Association (ANA) through the American Nurses Foundation (ANF), and represents a strategic alliance among ANA, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing, New York University, The Steinhardt School of Education, Division of Nursing.

British Geriatrics Society (BGS)
The Society is the only professional association, in the United Kingdom, of doctors practising geriatric medicine. The majority of the 2300 members worldwide are consultants in geriatric medicine, the psychiatry of old age, public health medicine, general practitioners, and scientists engaged in the research of age-related disease. The Huffington Center on Aging has one of the most advanced aging research programs in the country. Especially prominent are our programs in cell and molecular biology of aging, cardiovascular diseases, ethics and outcomes research. The mission of IPA is to improve the mental health of older people everywhere through education, research, professional development, advocacy, health promotion, and service development.

Multidisciplinary Links: IPA will focus on its commitment to linking and working with all professionals involved in improving the mental health care of the elderly.

Technologies: IPA will focus on the use of technology to disseminate information, increase the interaction between professionals in the field, and provide educational programs.

Internal/Operating Issues: The leadership of IPA will continue to focus on operating issues to ensure the management of the organization is streamlined, responsive, and fiscally sound.

Service Provisions/Guidelines: IPA will focus on providing the healthcare community with the service provisions and guidelines to enhance the mental healthcare of the elderly.

Links with Patients and Caregivers: IPA will focus on providing information and assistance to patients and caregivers.

National Council on the Aging
National Council on the Aging Founded in 1950, The National Council on the Aging is a national network of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving the health and independence of older persons and increasing their continuing contributions to communities, society and future generations.

Its 3,800 members include senior centers, adult day service centers, area agencies on aging, faith congregations, senior housing facilities, employment services, and other consumer organizations.

National Institute on Aging
