YogYoga Exercise Books from myfoodcount.com

Yoga is a family of ancient Hindu spiritual practices that originated in India, where it remains a vibrant living tradition and is seen as a means to enlightenment. Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Raja Yoga are considered the four main yogas, but there are many other types. In other parts of the world where yoga is popular, notably the West, Yoga has become associated with the asanas (postures) of Hatha Yoga, which are popular as fitness exercises and also form the basis of an expanding business.

Yoga as a means to enlightenment is central to Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism and has influenced other religious and spiritual practices throughout the world. Important Hindu texts establishing the basis for yoga include the Upanishads, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

The Kids' Yoga Deck : 50 Poses and Games
by Annie Buckley

These cards are very useful in structuring a class for children. The children enjoy seeing the brightly colored cards which show how it looks when doing the pose. You can make your own "string of poses" for the children to do, as the deck suggests, by picking a card from each color (rainbow string), or there are other "strings" suggested (basic string, sleepy string, energy string, friends string, calming down string, warm-up for sports string). I teach yoga to children ages 6-12 at a Youth Center, and I use these cards for every class. We mostly use the Rainbow String, except I often put the partner poses (a yellow card) at the end of a class to close it. That way, the children leave the class feeling a connection with one another. Often, I pick two poses in a particular color group (usually the light green and the red cards) to extend the class to a 30 minute time frame. There are really nice GAMES at the bottom of each card, listed after instructions for doing the pose. They are clearly bulleted, and I have found them to be very useful. The children are interested in these cards, and they like to shuffle them around and read them. They can offer input for class content. These cards spark their interest in yoga. I have many "yoga for children" books which I use as supplements occasionally, but this yoga deck forms the structure for the children's yoga classes. I would recommend it for home use also. These cards are easy to use, and they make yoga FUN for the kids!

Richard Hittleman's Yoga : 28 Day Exercise Plan
by Richard Hittleman

I've had this book for many, many years and it is one of my favorite books on yoga. Whenever I stop exercising for a while and start to feel stiff all over - I fondly remember this book. And each time anew I am amazed how much more in only 28 days my body becomes flexible. There were times I wished Richard wrote a 365 day exercise plan, because often when I get to the end of the book, instead of continuing the practice, I stop doing the exercises. Then, later on, I return to it and start again from the beginning. In any event, if you want to become more flexible and like to have a wonderful exercise plan to follow, get this book. It's excellent! You, too will be amazed with results.

Real Men Do Yoga
by John Capouya

I have been practicing yoga since I was twelve, and bought this book for my fiancee last year. He is a golfer trying to make the PGA tour, and ever since he started doing yoga, his concentration and short game has improved.

I like the fact that this book is does not contain a lot the "new age" language, and gets straight to the point with regards to the physical and psychological benefits of yoga.

I definitely recommend his as V-Day gift, as the practice of yoga has many benifits hat expend beyond the realm of sports, as I can well attest.

Yoga Abs
by Judith Hanson Lasater

A unique vocabulary exists that ascribes a variety of emotions to the belly: "my guts are in a knot," "I knew it in my gut," "gut-wrenching," and "no guts, no glory." Yet too often, more emphasis is placed on the way the abdomen looks than how it feels and functions - a sterling six-pack can mask true abdominal trouble. Yoga Abs outlines a series of exercises, yoga poses (asana), and breathing practices designed to achieve optimal health for this crucial area, which houses the organs of both digestion and procreation. Drawing on her experience as a yoga instructor and physical therapist, Judith Hanson Lasater discusses the anatomy and philosophical aspects of the abdomen and offers a set of movements that create awareness of important muscles while developing and maintaining abdominal strength. Each exercise and asana lists the props or supports needed, safety guidelines, and practice instructions, and the book includes practical guidelines for moving mindfully through everyday tasks.

Yoga Breathing
by Richard Freeman

Yoga Breathing: A foundation course on yoga’s most essential practice

Breathing is so basic to yoga that some instruction is offered in nearly every beginner’s class. Yet, the precise fundamentals of yogic breathwork - and its potential to take us into the depths of yoga - are seldom taught to Western students. With "Yoga Breathing," Richard Freeman responds to this need.

Yogic breathwork, also known as pranayama, literally means "to release life energy from its bounds." When practiced correctly, pranayama has the ability to attune us to the intricate web of our thoughts, physiology, and energetic patterns - to quiet the mind and heighten receptivity - and to open us to "the intrinsic radiance of being fully present."

On "Yoga Breathing," listeners learn the essential principles and techniques of this tradition, including: The fundamentals of yogic breathwork • Finding the thread of the "internal breath" • Sushumna, the body’s central energetic axis • Ujjayi breathing practice • Dristi gazing/breathing • Opening the tree of breath • Lying and seated pranayama • Breathing and postures, and more

At his acclaimed Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado, Richard Freeman considers breathwork so important that he often devotes more than half of his class time to the practice. "Yoga Breathing" distills this master instructor’s rich insights and careful guidance into one complete two-session course, making them available to listeners everywhere.

Yoga for Beginners
by Mark Ansari, Liz Lark

I reviewed many yoga books before selecting this one. For starters, the binding is cleverly designed to allow you to keep it near your mat for a quick review of the posture.

The photos and descriptions of the postures are exceptionally clear. Variations on the postures are noted for those who have limited flexibility. The program of postures is well thought out and is excellent for beginners, and is rigorous enough for those who are serious about their practice.

One minor quibble--it would have been useful if the book contained information about the use of yoga props, such as straps, blocks and bolsters.

While yoga classes are great for learning different styles of yoga, and getting needed corrections and suggestions, I find this book to be the single best investment I have made in my yoga practice. Though I also use various yoga videos, this book is far superior to any of them.

The Joy of Partner Yoga
by Mishabae Edmond, John Running

Share the joys of yoga—and increase the benefits. The familiar postures of Hatha Yoga have renewed power and effectiveness when partners work together. Though all the asanas are touched upon, this comprehensive holistic program charts new ground in looking at a joint practice. There are creative interpretations for two of yogic breathing, symbolic hand gestures, mantras, and vinyasas—those special, flowing sequences of poses. For a restorative and healing workout, one person goes into repose while the other applies leans, stretches, twists, and compressions. Special advice on the art of partnering reveals how to create a positive, safe, and nurturing environment. In all the exchanges, the mutual support helps both people work better and improve alignment. Special black and white symbols representing each partner make directions easy to follow.

by Doug Swenson

Utilizing movements similar to tai chi, Sadhana Yoga techniques connect the standard yoga postures-keeping the flow of positive energy circulating in an improved workout for fitness and relaxation.

Now yoga students can achieve peace of mind and spirit while toning their bodies, with a revolutionary new approach that can be used with any type of practice.

by Janet Balaskas

I wish I would have discovered this book with my previous two pregnancies. I found the information helpful regarding childbirth and pain management. I got great relief from back pain (I had physical therapy that didn't work the first two pregnancies) and relaxation through the yoga practice. I would recommend this book to any pregnant woman. It has made my pregnancy much more enjoyable.

Cool Yoga Tricks
by Miriam Austin

This book is all about learning to modify yoga poses to make them work for YOU. It begins by helping you to become more aware of your body and how to control the way it moves. For example, many yoga poses include the instruction "roll your thighs outward"--how do you do that? This book doesn't just TELL you how, it SHOWS you how! Using a varitey of props such as blankets, straps, bolsters, chairs, and even helpful friends, you will learn to find comfort in some of the most common yoga poses, such as downward facing dog, standing forward bend, seated forward bend, and headstand. Yoga teachers and students of various shapes and sizes illustrate the many poses included in this book. This book is an excellent tool for anyone looking to further their yoga practice by attaining postures best suited to their ability.
