Tennis Specific Training Books from myfoodcount.com

Tennis is a sport played between either two players ("Singles") or two teams of two players ("doubles"). Players use a stringed racquet to strike a ball, a hollow rubber ball covered in felt, over a net into the opponent's court. In some places tennis is still called lawn tennis to distinguish it from real tennis (also known as royal tennis or court tennis), an older form of the game that is played indoors on a very different kind of a court.Originating in England in the late 19th Century, the game spread first throughout the English-speaking world, particularly among the upper classes. Tennis is now an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society, by all ages, and in many countries around the world. Its rules have remained remarkably unchanged since the early 1900s. Along with its millions of players, millions of people follow tennis as a spectator sport, especially the four Grand Slam tournaments.

Speed Training for Tennis
by Manfred Grosser, Heinz Kraft, Richard Schonborn

Another good piece of work from the former Chief Trainer of the German Tennis Federation. Richard is still very much active in research for tennis - in all aspects of the game. Currently, a much sought after speaker at the International Tennis Federation's seminars worldwide, this new work by him provides greater practical knowledge to be added for speed around/across the tennis court, as distinct from pure speed down a 100 metre track. Covered topics include enhancing innate speed, power in speed, endurance etc. Coaches of all levels of skill will definitely find something useful in this new book. I know I have, besides the hundreds of coaches in Europe and the Americas applying it on court at this moment when you are reading this review.

Tennis Course Vol. 1: Techniques & Tactics
by Deutscher Tennis Bund (German Tennis Organization)

One of the best on technique written by top German (Deustcher Tennis Bund) authorities. There are multiple action-photo sequences for most techniques and illustrations of errors and what to do. Few books come close to its clarity or thoroughness in covering tactics. It is a bit dry (as with other German tennis books) but that doesn't take away from the usefulness of this tome as a reference.

The tactical section leaves much to be desired however, since it discusses mostly technique but doesn't address how the two really come together. Two-thirds or more of the book is devoted to technique. The tactical section is quite applicable although basic.

Tennis Course Vol. 2: Lessons & Training
by German Tennis Organization, Deutscher Tennis Bund (Corporate Author)

This book progresses beyond the basics covered in Tennis Course, Volume One and presents the techniques of tennis training from an instructor's point of view. It can be used as an instruction manual in tandem with Volume One, or used alone to instruct players who already have knowledge of the basics. The book offers useful advice to players at all levels of competence. A straightforward text, enhanced with 79 full-color photos and 149 instructive line illustrations, covers a variety of topics of special interest to tennis players and instructors, including: basics of tennis instruction, methods of instruction for different target groups, performance requirements as a basis for training, training methods to develop coordination, psychological basics, and much more. Players and coaches get some understanding of the general training and physical conditioning required for high-level achievement in the game. Training and competition plans are presented for the benefit of players at all levels.

The Tennis Drill Book (Tennis Drill Book, Paper)
by Sharon Petro

This is an excellent book on the subject. This is the second tennis drill book I have read, and this one is slightly better. The 100 drills are explained in the most efficient and concise way possible. In tennis, a picture is worth a thousand words. And, the author understands that perfectly well. Almost every single drill is clearly illustrated which greatly enhances your understanding of what that specific drill is about.

The author covers all the tennis drill situations you would encounter, single, threesome, doubles, and groups.

I am a former college player. I have played, watched, and studied tennis all my life. But, I probably knew only half of the drills mentioned in this book. In other words, this book taught me a lot of skills I could focus on practicing on the tennis court to improve my game. In tennis, there is no finish line. You are never too good. But, this book will help you get as good as you can or want to get, and have a lot of fun doing it. I strongly recommend it.

Pressure Tennis
by Paul Wardlaw

Skill alone won’t make tennis players great—they must also have the mental toughness it takes to perform under pressure. To prepare for the demands of competitive match play, look no further than the training system found in Pressure Tennis.

Tennis coach Paul Wardlaw has created and refined his extraordinary training program through 14 successful seasons at the college level. His system teaches you how to design and implement effective practice sessions using pressure drills that simulate match-like conditions.

With Wardlaw’s system in place, you will notice immediate improvements in concentration, motivation, confidence, and conditioning. More important, players develop a resilience to match play pressure and welcome the challenge of even the toughest opponent. To help evaluate progress, Wardlaw has also included a novel Performance Index that provides coaches with a more objective measure of each player’s execution, effort, and ranking on the team.

Whether you’re a tennis player or a coach, you’ll want the demanding drills and practice plans found in Pressure Tennis to help instill the strong mental skills necessary for a winning season.

This book is meant for young people, beginners as well as advanced players, and last but not least, for coaches and parents involved with tennis training. Based on a detailed analysis of the game, the book explains the technique and tactics of contemporary tennis, the methodology of practice, and sports training of tennis players.
