Bacteria for Breakfast: Probiotics for Good Health (Paperback)
by Kelly Dowhower Karpa, PhD, RPh (Author)

Although in Western society the beneficial aspects of bacteria have been increasingly minimized, we actually need bacteria in our digestive tracts for good health. This resource explains, to laymen and physicians, how probiotics support immune function, prevent urogenital infections, and maintain good gastrintestinal health.

Dr. Karpa\'s interests are varied. Some days she can be found behind the counter of a small town pharmacy in central Pennsylvania working as a pharmacist. Other days you will find her teaching in the lecture halls of Pennsylvania State University\'s College of Medicine where she is an assistant professor with the department of pharmacology. Most days, Dr. Karpa will be found working at home, as she writes medical literature and consults for a variety of organizations. But the role of which she is most proud, however, is the one she fills every day: nuturing and rearing her two children with her husband. It was while wearing her "mommy hat" that she stumbled across probiotics. The experience and knowledge Dr. Karpa gained when her oldest child was seriously ill with a life-threatening gastrointestinal infection laid the foundation for this book.

Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet (Paperback)
by Elaine Gloria Gottschall (Author)

I have been on this regimen for three years. During this time I have been drug and symptom free. A year and half ago I posted the following review, which is even more dramatic proof now: After a year and a half on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, I finally followed my gastroenterologist's request to get a colonoscopy. After all, it had been over four years since the last time anyone had given me any sort of exam of the gut, and 18 years with Crohns. My doc said "We got all the way to the cecum. No evidence at all of Crohns. No scars. No inflammation. Nothing. You look completely normal."

This dietary modification is far better than a drug-induced remission for me because even in past drug-induced 'remissions' my past exams have showed indication of disease. Now there are no drugs, no side effects. I believe this diet is a superior way to bring on a controlled remission.

This book guides the patient through the process of understanding their illness, describing the research that contributed to creating the diet, how to start the diet, what foods can be added and when. The book also contains valuable a list of links to "SCDiet" resources and online support groups that are available over the Internet.

Fiber Menace: The Truth About the Leading Role of Fiber in Diet Failure, Constipation, Hemorrhoids, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease, and Colon Cancer (Paperback)
by Konstantin Monastyrsky (Author)

My training as a physician included many hours of nutrition, but fiber was only mentioned in regards to the effects of a deficiency. Never once did any of my professors consider the possibility that too much of what has always been considered a good thing' could have such harmful or far-reaching consequences. The author's detailed description of the trauma imposed to the gastrointestinal mucosa by the expanding fiber is a vivid reminder that returning to the basics of GI function and logically thinking through what our bodies actually are designed to do with the food we eat, should be the first step on anyone's journey to recovery from digestive disorders. Thanks to the insights in this book I have slowly begun to change my approach to common patient symptoms, which I traditionally would have treated by suggesting increased fiber and more water to correct! So far the results are promising. Dr. John Turner, DC, CCSP, DIBCN --Wise Traditions Newsletter by Weston A. Price foundation

The Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Fact Book (Hardcover)
by Crohn's & Colitis Foundation (Author), Peter A. Banks (Editor), Daniel H. Present (Editor), Penny Steiner (Editor)

It used to be that this was the only 'laypersons' book out there for people suffering from IBD. Newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 10 years ago, I found this book to be enlightening and informative. It helped me to get a handle on things when I felt my life spiraling out of control due to a disease I had never even heard of before. Today those suffering from ulcerative colitis and Chrohn's Disease have more reading material at their disposal, but this book remains as the staple for any person suffering from IBD. It can also serve as an invaluable resource to friends and family of IBD survivors who also feel confused and helpless. Anyone who has ever taken prednisone for IBD knows the symptoms and treatments for these diseases can make articulate and unemotional explanations almost impossible to formulate. Handing over a copy of this to your siblings, parents, spouse, or even your roommate is the best thing you can do for them, and for yourself.

The Complete Crohnie Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for the Crohn's Disease Patient (Paperback)
by Robert R. Pilkington (Author)

I read this book with much apprehension because I am tired of everybody trying to make a buck off my health.

The "Complete" thing was something that I was totally afraid of. I was just simply tired of all the books that "promised" the best information about Crohn's Disease.

The best thing about this book is that it promises nothing but delivers everything.

After 7 years of dealing with a disease that just refuses to go away, it was nice to see that someone else realizes what it is like to deal with it and keep a sense of humor about it. Even with the problems of Crohn's Disease, Robert Pilkington delivers the information in language that I can understand and in situations I have actually had to experience and deal with.

The real world situations that are shown about the everyday reality of a Crohn's Disease is placed at the right time and in the right place throughout this book. I cannot express enough how this book made me take a look at my everyday life and how I, and I alone can control this disease.

It was nice to see that I am not the only one having to deal with the fact the my family and friends have no clue about what I live with.

I would recommend this book to every one that has Crohn's Disease and their family and friends.

The Culinary Couple's Creative Colitis Cookbook (Spiral-bound)
by Denise Weale (Author), Ross Weale (Author)

Stephen Holland, M.D. is a gastroenterologist on the faculty at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. He is an assistant professor of medicine and an assistant professor of clinical pharmacology in the department of Biomedical and Therapeutic Sciences at the medical school. His research and clinical interest is in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, that is, Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. He is interested in clinical studies in patients with Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis.

I recently had a chance to review a short cookbook for people with active UC. Written by Denise and Ross Weale, it is a pocket size cookbook with 100 recipes of low fiber non-dairy recipes. Simple in design and concept, with a cute cover, it is a nicely done book. The strength of it is that there are a variety of recipes, so that it really looks like someone with digestive disease can survive. It is organized as breakfast, bread, soups and sauces, side dishes, pizza, and main course. In the main course part are Grilled chicken burrito, oriental potstickers, lemon chicken, pot roast, shepherd's pie, veal and potato stew, and many more. It is obvious that the authors have put in a variety of foods and styles of cooking. The strength of the cookbook is that is low fiber and milk free, which can be a benefit for symptoms during a flare. Also, the sheer variety of recipes may make the diet during a flare more enjoyable than when one is on one's regular diet between attacks. It is not a book that makes any claims on keeping colitis away. Anyway, the recipes are all doable, so check it out.
