Golf's Mental Magic--Four Strategies for Mental Toughness
by Guy S. Fasciana, Hale Irwin (Contributor), Terry Dill (Contributor)

Athletes know the importance of mental toughness in competition. Golf's Mental Magic--Four Strategies for Mental Toughness is the ultimate "How To" book for this essential ingredient in golf performance. Four strategies are uniquely presented within the twelve chapters--Managing Your Mind, Sports Nutrition and Fitness, Learning Mental Skills, and Peak Performance and Stress Management.

PGA Tour Professionals Hale Irwin, Emlyn Aubrey, and Terry Dill have made contributions. Hale Irwin, three-time US Open and one-time Senior Open Winner states in his foreword: "..It is my feeling that the mental aspects of the game are fundamentally more important than the physical...you may well find this book to further enhance these principles upon which my game is predicated." He has won 9 PGA Tour victories and 25 Senior PGA victories over the last three decades and, in 1999, was the 2nd money winner on the Senior PGA Tour.

Hale Irwin also wrote about "The Psychology of Winning" in an appendix.

Emlyn Aubrey, a PGA Tour Professional, is known for his mental skills. Over the past 6 years he has won two Nike Tour victories and has steadily improved his position on tour. His 1998 win at the Nike Wichita Open was a record for that year with a 23-under-par victory. He also had the most top-10 finishes of any player in 1998.During 1999, he steadily moved up in the PGA Tour statistics. He wrote an appendix entitled: "The Importance of Having a Routine".

Terry Dill is a Senior Tour professional who retired from his law profession to seek a career in golf. Terry Dill wrote the introduction in which he describes how Dr. Fasciana helped him to win his first Senior PGA victory.

Clearly, Golf is a game of mental skills. While there are other books that discuss the mental aspects, none quite go to the extent of Golf's Mental Magic--Four Strategies for Mental Toughness in describing the details of learning and applying mental skills to golf. Workbook sections help readers to acquire such mental skills as self-esteem, goal setting, concentration, confidence, relaxation, visualization, positive mental attitude, and emotional control.

The depth of Golf's Mental Magic-Four Strategies for Mental Toughness is not surprising once you learn the educational background of Dr. Guy S. Fasciana. Because of his medical training in college and dental school, he is in tune with the importance of nutrition and fitness on physical and mental well-being. His masters degrees in Health Education and Sports Psychology links the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of Peak Performance. Dr. Fasciana has taught college courses and has conducted workshops in sports psychology, stress management, and personal development at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas. He is currently a medical practice administrator in Greenville, South Carolina.

Even if one doesn't play golf, this well written book will help to develop a positive mental attitude that will enhance life as well as performance in any sport. The information discussed on Stress Management, Nutrition, and Fitness will help in all aspects of life. This book can become a classic on the mental approach to golf and would be a great addition to anyone's library.

A golfer at age 50 is considered a senior. This is crazy because that is the prime of life. They may be the last chapter of a life, but they can be the golden years. There is more to than swinging a golf club. It is a way of life.

A good golf swing means better scores and a good golf swing is dependant on body condition, flexability and coordination. Your body has to be able to make those difficult turns and movements that demand strength and flexability.

We know our game is not going to get much better and we feel all the frustrations that go along with the game. We keep plugging along perfecting the defects in our swing. This book provides a formula that can add years of satisfying golf life. The author followed this roadmap from the age of 50 to the present at age 92 and shoots in the high 80's, so there is hope for any senior who is willing to make the effort. If they want to go for it, this book may be of help.

Smart Golf : Wisdom and Strategies from the "Thinking Man's Golfer"
by Hale Irwin, Robin McMillan

Three-time U.S. Open winner Hale Irwin's message is an obvious one, but even good golfers fight it every day--the lowest score on the course wins. Period. A Fred Couples swing and the power ofTiger Woods might elicit oohs of envy from your playing partners, but the ability to navigate the course in the fewest strokes requires more than looking good and hitting long. It's a talent that takes its inspiration and direction from a golfer's most powerful but overlooked muscle: the brain. And that's exactly the muscle Irwin wants to help you stretch; he'll let others tweak your mechanics.

Irwin, like any good teacher, mixes instruction with encouragement, drawing on personal experience and anecdotes to illustrate his points. The first half of his course covers "Smart Game Management," which includes setting reasonable goals, establishing an intelligent practice routine, choosing the right equipment and properly caring for it, and--the most radical concept of all--staying healthy. This latter lesson includes tips on mental fitness ("Temper and smart golf don't go together"), physical fitness ("Those that stay in shape have a better chance of succeeding"), and proper diet and nutrition. The second half of Smart Golf targets course management--setting up pre-round checklists and strategies, using the game's byzantine rules to your benefit, and saving valuable strokes with an intelligent short game. In the end, Irwin guides you through an imaginary round, thinking you through various tactics and shot options. Smart stuff indeed, regardless of your level of play. All Hale!
