Ecological Medicine : Healing the Earth, Healing Ourselves (The Bioneers Series)
by J. P. Harpignies, Dr. Andrew Weil, Kenny Ausubel (Editor)
Drawn largely from luminous presentations given at the annual Bioneers Conference, this pathfinding book--the first in a new Bioneers Series published by Sierra Club Books--focuses on pragmatic solutions emerging at the fertile edges between the overlapping worlds of environmental restoration and holistic healing. In this kaleidoscopic collection, many of the world's leading health visionaries show us how human health is inescapably dependent on the health of our environment.
The rich array of voices in this book reflects the collective intelligence of the emerging movement known as Ecological Medicine. Its advocates look to the strategic public health measures that first do no harm to the environment and, in turn, successfully improve human health. They call for prevention and precaution as the first line of action. They seek to heal the tragic split that conventional medicine made from nature and to conjure nature's own mysterious capacity for self-repair. They celebrate the virtues of ancient natural-medicine practices but also embrace an integrative medicine that uses the best of all approaches to healing--with special emphasis on the centrality of the human spirit in the healing process. Their inspiring work, described so compellingly in this book, is of critical relevance to everyone concerned about health and the environment.

Ask Dr. Weil
by Andrew Md Weil
Ask Dr. Weil is a combination of six previously published collections of questions that he received on his Web site: Women's Health, Healthy Living, Natural Remedies, Common Illnesses, Vitamins and Minerals, and Your Top Health Concerns. Those who've read Weil's books--particularly Spontaneous Healing, 8 Weeks to Optimum Health, and Natural Health, Natural Medicine--will find familiar advice here. In that sense, Ask Dr. Weil serves as a solid and thorough introduction to his ideas and methods, while the other books present those ideas in more depth.
What Ask Dr. Weil may lack in depth, though, it more than makes up for in breadth. For example, in a question about enemas--which he's against--he notes that constipation was once considered an affliction exclusive to the most noble and intelligent men, and that Louis XIV of France sometimes took four enemas a day. A surprising opinion comes in response to a question about the once-popular abdominal-training devices sold on infomercials. "A super-flat abdomen with tight, rippling muscles will restrict the motion of the intestines during digestion," he writes. His suggestion: do some crunches, but don't try to look like the men and women in Bally's gym commercials.
In fact, just when you think you can predict which way Dr. Weil will go on an issue, he surprises you by being skeptical about a popular nutritional supplement or treatment. Even in a simple question-and-answer format such as this, the good doctor manages to be entertaining and iconoclastic.

The Best Alternative Medicine
by Dr. Kenneth R. Pelletier, Andrew Weil
Complementary and alternative medicine, which ranges from acupuncture and chiropractic care to more esoteric disciplines such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, was a $14 billion industry by the year 2000. As the public's interest in health practices outside the purview of conventional medicine has increased, so has the controversy about the efficacy of such methods. But while conventional doctors criticize the absence of conclusive clinical evidence for most alternative therapies, there is nevertheless a growing number of people who suffer from chronic illnesses and, frustrated by the usual medical route, are willing to try new modalities. In The Best Alternative Medicine, Dr. Kenneth Pelletier of the Stanford School of Medicine addresses the debate head-on with the goal of providing an authoritative consumer reference guide that focuses on the existing body of clinical research (funded in large part by the National Institutes of Health) and the safest applications of the 12 most common practices. Pelletier, who is also the director of the National Institutes of Health's Complementary and Alternative Medicine Program and the author of Sound Mind, Sound Body: A New Model for Lifelong Health, evaluates those approaches mentioned above as well as mind-body medicine, supplements, Western herbal medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, and the healing applications of spirituality from three perspectives: what works, what doesn't work, and what is "in the works." He then presents an A to Z of health conditions--from AIDS and arthritis to osteoporosis and varicose veins--with bulleted points referencing the beneficial alternative therapies. While Pelletier is clearly an advocate of complementary and alternative medicine, he takes a discerning position and carefully cuts through the jargon and unsubstantiated claims to present an unbiased, evidence-based resource that will be invaluable to people considering a new approach to their health care.

Healthy Aging : A Lifelong Guide to Your Physical and Spiritual Well-Being
by Andrew Weil
Dr. Weil has raised dispensing health advice to an art form. Instead of making his audience feel inadequate or guilty about bad habits, he seems to subconsciously convince readers to do better merely by presenting health facts in a non-threatening way. Healthy Aging is his most scientifically technical book yet (you'll learn all about enzymes like telomerase and cell division and the chemistry behind phytonutrients like indole-3-carbinol, and the connection between cancer and other degenerative diseases like diabetes) yet by far his most fascinating.
His main mission here is to recommend "aging gracefully," which he considers accepting the process instead of fighting it. As the director of the country's leading integrative-medicine clinic (combining the best of traditional and alternative worlds), of course he disses Botox and the slew of $100-a-jar face creams out there. It's also no surprise that he focuses on proper nutrition, moderate exercise, and meditation and rest among his "12-point program for healthy aging." (Triathletes and exercise addicts should take special note of the research linking excessive exercise and ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.) He occasionally references his earlier works, including 8 Weeks to Optimum Health. But the most eye-opening sections are those that discuss the spirituality of aging and its emotional aspects. "Aging can bring frailty and suffering, but it can also bring depth and richness of experience, complexity of being, serenity, wisdom, and its own kind of power and grace," he writes. At 63, Weil is still a bit shy of senior status, but is aging well indeed, with the legacy of his late 93-year-old mother (who’s touchingly eulogized by Weil in this book) to guide him.

8 Weeks to Optimum Health
by Andrew Weil M.D.
"Health," Dr. Andrew Weil writes, "is a dynamic and temporary state of equilibrium destined to break down as conditions change." In other words, there's no such thing as the type of health that allows you to feel equally great every day of your life. Instead, Weil suggests, your goal should be to improve your resilience to disease, and while you're at it, feel more joy and strength.
As to how you should gain this strength, joy, and resilience, Weil doesn't come on with a hard sell to give up every bad habit or all of the foods you enjoy. Instead, he suggests gradual changes: clean your pantry of whatever cooking oils you have there, except olive oil; start taking vitamin C three times a day; walk a few minutes a day; eat some fish and broccoli. The program is so simple and sensible that anyone trying it probably will feel better in a week.
The program then gets progressively more involved--more supplements; more of a shift toward a diet based on whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; more exercise. Besides these steady changes, each week's program has a focus: In week 2, you start drinking bottled or filtered water; week 3 focuses on organic produce; week 4, on sleep; week 5, using a steam bath or sauna; week 6, trying a "universal tonic" like ginseng; week 7, volunteering in your community; and finally, in week 8, figuring out how to integrate permanently the elements of the program into your life.
Even those who don't go for the entire program will probably find something here to like--the recipes, maybe, or the suggestion that you cut back on strenuous types of exercise like running and competitive sports in favor of brisk walks. It's perfectly useful either way: as a total lifestyle overhaul, or a series of suggestions, any one or two of which will probably help you feel better.
