Selma Diamond (August 5, 1920 - May 13, 1985) was a Canadian-born comedic actress and TV writer. Chain smoking, hoarse voiced, and tiny, she was best known for her role on Night Court.
Early in her career, she worked as a writer for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, and she was supposedly the inspiration for the Sally Rogers character on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
The gruff-voiced secretary "Roz" in Monsters, Inc., who was always hounding the lead characters about getting their paperwork done, was voiced by a man doing a good imitation of Selma Diamond.
In 1982, she appeared in My Favorite Year with a memorable small role as wardrobe mistress for King Kaiser's Comedy Calvalcade, a fictional show which clearly echoed the time and venue of her work for Sid Caesar.
During the run of Night Court she died from lung cancer at age 64. (Her character was replaced by a different female bailiff, played by Florence Halop, who likewise died from cancer before the show ended.)
She never married or had children.
