David Douglas Garrard (born February 14, 1978 in East Orange, New Jersey) is an American football player who plays quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Ironically, the arguably greatest game in his college career was against his current competitor for starting quarterback position on the Jacksonville Jaguars, Byron Leftwich. Garrard was the starting quarterback for East Carolina University and Leftwich was the starting quarterback for Marshall University in the 2001 GMAC Bowl. After going into double-overtime, Leftwich was finally able to lead Marshall to victory over Garrard's East Carolina Pirates after facing a prior thirty-point deficit. [1]
Garrard, who was drafted from East Carolina University in 2002, became the Jaguars' starting quarterback after Byron Leftwich was injured during Week 9 of the 2004 National Football League season with a sprained left knee. After the 2004 season, he opted to stay with the Jaguars as a back-up instead of pursuing a chance at starting for another team.
He also started 5 games of the 2005 season when Leftwich went down with an injury in week 11. Garrard went 4-1 in those starts losing only to then-undefeated Indianapolis Colts.
In 2006, he was named starter in Week 8 after Byron Leftwich was injured.
In a game against the Tennessee Titans in December 2006, Garrard had two interceptions and a fumble returned for a touchdown in a 24-21 loss.
