FAMOUS PEOPLE WITH EVERYDAY PROBLEMS
AIDS / HIV DISEASE - LEONARD FREY

d

Leonard Frey (born September 4, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York; died August 24, 1988 in New York) was an American actor.

As Motel, the tailor, Frey earned an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor in the lush roadshow version of Fiddler on the Roof, primarily because of his tour-de-force song number "Wonder of Wonders," where he sings and dances enraptured over the fact that he can marry Tzeitel, Tevye's eldest daughter, in spite of Motel's poverty. Previously, Frey has stunned a few movie audiences as the bitter, pockmarked gay man who dreads his upcoming birthday in the landmark yet rarely-seen "Boys in the Band." This play and film introduced world-wide audiences to a new culture of gay men who supported each other, providing friendship, family and, when necessary, reality checks. Frey later died of an AIDS-related illness.
